The Seychelles island paradise

The Seychelles consists of many islands in the Indian Ocean that have long been considered some of the world’s greatest natural treasures. An archipelago nation that stretches from the east coast of Africa to the north east island of Madagascar, the Seychelles is a sought-after fishing, sailing and holiday destination.

The islands are known for their pristine beaches, which are tourist attractions, particularly on the larger islands of Mahè, La Digue and Praslin. The Seychelles islands are sufficiently removed from the rush of everyday living. This means that they remain largely untouched by the presence of global franchises and sprawling industrial centres; and yet, they maintain a high standard of living through resorts, hotels, guesthouses and chalets. The islands’ unspoilt beauty offers a level of harmony and natural peace that few other holiday destinations possess.

Eden Island is a residential marina development located just a few hundred metres from Mahè and the two islands are connected via a bridge. This Seychelles island is over 56 hectares in size and offers 16 hectares of private waterways, along with moorings in the Eden Island Marina. Properties for sale include apartments, maisons and villas. Read more about Eden Island in the Seychelles or click through to the apartment listings to view available property for sale.

Seychelles geography

The Seychelles geography is made up of an inner and an outer cluster, where the inner circle comprises the principal islands of Mahè, Praslin and La Digue. These inner islands are home to the majority of the local population. The outer islands are miniature worlds that are largely untouched and present ample opportunities for exploration and finding your island paradise.

Tourism makes up a significant portion of the Seychelles’ economy as every island location is unique and presents opportunities to discover breathtaking beaches and forest vegetation. As a result, the Seychelles multi-party government welcomes the presence of visitors and foreigners to the islands. Indeed, the Seychelles flag, with its bands of blue, yellow, red, white and green, encapsulates the nation’s appreciation for harmony with the natural environment. Seychelles climate

The Seychelles weather is temperate - although the islands tend to experience a lot of rain between November and January - with calm transition periods that allow for clear visibility for deep-sea divers throughout the year. The Seychelles climate is indicative of tropical islands close to the equator in that they often experience brief showers followed by warm and pleasant sunshine. Owing to the fact that the temperature seldom rises above 31º C, Seychelles beaches provide comfortable and sunny island vacation spots, even in the humid months between December and April. As most of the islands are located outside of the cyclone belt, high winds are rare, while southeast trade winds blow regularly between the months of May and November. As a result, these islands are pleasant beach holiday destinations no matter what time of the year you choose to visit.

Seychelles history

The history of the Seychelles has been prophetic of the rich ethnicity and love for Creole traditions that exist on the islands today. Having broken away from the Pangean super continent approximately 180 million years ago, the Seychelles drifted 1500 kilometres to form the glittering archipelago off the east coast of Africa that we know today. Remaining untouched for millennia and visited only by early Arabian navigators, and possibly Phoenician or Polynesian sailors, the Seychelles islands thrived in isolation.

In 1501, the Portuguese navigator, Juan de Nova, made the first recorded landfall, and in 1502 Vasco de Gama named that land the Islands of the Admiral. Through three long centuries, the Seychelles islands remained unvisited until the French established a settlement in 1770, followed by British settlers in 1814. The islands achieved independence from the Commonwealth in 1976, and today thrive under multi-party democratic rule.

Seychelles culture

Seychelles culture is a vibrant melting pot of those who have come before, from the first Arab and Phoenician seafarers and Portuguese explorers to the French settlers, Malabar Indians, Chinese traders and British colonists. The national languages are English, French and Creole.  From a great fusion of religious beliefs, customs and traditions, the Seychellois nation was born, bringing colourful and unique influences to bear on local architecture, arts, music, recreation and cuisine. A blend of French gastronomy with the spices of the East, Seychelles food makes use of a great range of textures, tastes, ingredients and colours.

Seychelles islands

The Seychelles islands (116 in total) provide adventure and leisure activities, including hiking, swimming, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, boating, cycling and fishing. For example, Bird Island is renowned for its abundance of birdlife, Curieuse is home to hundreds of Aldabra Giant Tortoises, and Fregate hosts one of the world’s most celebrated beaches: Anse Victorin.

The Seychelles island archipelago is made up of two clusters, an inner and an outer ring, with the distinct physical attributes of either granite or coral bases. The Aldabra Group, renowned for the Aldabra Atoll, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved natural environments in the world, comprises 17 591km² of the outer cluster. Exploring the sparsely populated outer islands can give visitors a chance to experience a life that remains largely unaffected by the modern world.

Mahé, La Digue and Praslin are among the inner, populated islands, which host some of the world’s most sought-after beaches. These include the Beau Vallon beach on Mahé, Anse Source D’Argent on La Digue and Anse Lazio on Praslin. Islands nearby Mahé that offer excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing during a Seychelles holiday include Saint Anne, Cerf Island, Long Island, Round Island, Moyenne and Ile Cachée.

Access and getting around

Built with a sound infrastructure, Seychelles presents an opportunity for relaxed holidays, intermingled with water and island adventures. As a result, island hopping is a favourite pastime among Seychelles residents, and it can be done via airplane, helicopter, ferry, chartered boat, yacht, motor boat, or even fishing boat.

The Seychelles International Airport is located on Mahè and it receives many direct Seychelles flights of major airlines from large cities including London, Paris, Rome, Singapore and Johannesburg. In addition to international flights, Air Seychelles provides inter-island connection flights in smaller aircraft. Private carriers also private charter flights and helicopter services.
